Looking to get out of the house and back into nature during these colder months? Bergen and Rockland Counties are full of amazing places to walk, hike or just take in the beautiful views. Why not try one of the local scenic spots below?
Sterling Forest State Park: Tuxedo, NJ
Sterling Forest State Park is compromised of over 20,000 acres of woodland, and home to a handful of species native to New Jersey. The park offers fishing and hunting opportunities, on top of its numerous hiking trails. The US Senator Frank R. Lautenberg Visitor Center, which overlooks Sterling Lake, is a great local resource and features exhibits about the local environment.
Ramapo Reservation: Mahwah, NJ
At “The Res,” there are over five trail loops to choose from, ranging in difficulty, so there’s a hike for everyone. The Vista Loop Trail might be the most popular, and includes three panoramic views, a pond and a waterfall. It’s a great spot for dogs, too! The reservation is about a 10-minute drive from Suffern and a quick ride from surrounding towns like Ramsey and Allendale.
Castle Point Trail: Ramapo Mountain State Forest
Did some say “photo op?” Castle Point Trail is a loop hike that follows the shore of the Ramapo Lake and ends at the ruins of an old stone castle and tower. It was once the mansion of William Porter, who built it in 1910 and whose widow lived there until the 1940s.
Hook Mountain: Nyack, NY
If you’re looking for a longer hike, try the “Long Path” at Hook Mountain…the full loop is about 12 miles and offers stunning views of the mountain itself. If you’re more into biking, you can take the biking path that follows the river’s edge from Haverstraw Beach State Park to Nyack Beach State Park.
Kakiat Park: Montebello, NY
The trail at Kakiat Park starts at the parking area and crosses into both Harriman State Park and Dater Mountain County Park; talk about an experience! The park is also used for horseback riding and picnicking during the warmer months, and there is an off-leash dog area near the parking lot.
